Muscle loss as we age is only natural, but, we can preserve as much as possible with a little know how.
Things are different for men and women.
Considering men, as we age we have less and less help from our friend Testosterone, so every physical activity we make our bodies perform is a stress and this stress releases a stress hormone called Cortisol and Cortisol is an antagonist to Testosterone.
How do we prevent Cortisol?
You can’t, it’s a natural response. However, what you can do is increase the antagonist to Cortisol, and that is Insulin. Increasing Insulin during and after a workout is a surefire way to help retain or build muscle mass. Spiking insulin levels during this time has been shown to decrease cortisol. Be careful though, as we age we also become less and less sensitive to insulin (Diabetes). So I suggest consulting with your physician before starting something like this.
Things that spike Insulin:
-Gatorade
-Protein Drinks
-Fruit Drinks
Also, consider your diet too. Proper diet is far more important now for maintaining Testosterone; and the biggest Testosterone killer is Alcohol, namely beer.
So to recap maintain your workout schedule, and preserve your testosterone levels with a proper diet.
Good luck and I hope this helps!!
