I’ve always been a firm believer in free weights over machines. Reason being is supportive muscle and secondary muscle movement. When you are on a machine it is pretty isolated; you’re either seated or held stationary so to only move the targeted muscles. Is this bad? No, you’ll get a very effective workout using machines. However, if you want to strengthen all parts of your body EX:Bench Press(Targeted muscle: Chest, secondary muscle: Triceps, support muscle: Core)- free weights are the answer. Of course, the key with fitness is sticking with it and being safe. So whatever you are comfortable doing, do that and have fun! Eventually you'll get comfortable enough and decide to switch to the more complex movements all of which involve free weights.
